<image:title>Takia's Two Cents - To Sum it Up - "Success is in the details," at least that is the saying. Sometimes, for our younger learners, maybe even our older learners too, the details can be a lot to muddle through.</image:title>

<image:title>Takia's Two Cents - To Sum it Up - Students are not alone in their frustration. Teachers can be daunted by the task of helping students to summarize-limit their responses and discussions about a text to the essentials.</image:title>

<image:title>Takia's Two Cents - To Sum it Up - A retelling involves sequence; it is shaped by details and particulars. A summary is something else. Students may be naturals at retelling, but summarizing is a skill that may exasperate them.</image:title>

There are so many questions to ask, so many parts of the learning process, so much information to exchange and remember. It can seem at times that what is meant to be a collaborative exchange can be reduced to a swapping of complaints.</image:caption>

<image:title>Takia's Two Cents - And the Winner is… - This simple organizer offers a step-by-step process for students to practice many of the skills that lead to proficiency in reading and writing including paraphrasing, using text-based evidence to enhance an argument or point of view, and making connections (text-to-text, text-to-self, text-to-world).</image:title>

<image:title>Takia's Two Cents - And the Winner is… - There is no secret formula for teaching or developing literacy skills in the young readers and writers entrusted to us. <image:title>Takia's Two Cents - “F” is for Fault - A young person shared their progress in school with me recently. Sagging, slumping shoulders, voice cracking with disappointment- it was hard to watch. Their sorrow over the information in the report was palpable. What was even harder to tolerate was the student's belief that the grades somehow were a complete reflection of themselves as a learner- maybe even a person. Somehow the letters, numbers and symbols displayed evidence of all of their efforts as a student to learn the content and concepts being taught. That is not at all true. Grades do indeed provide important information but it is only part of the story. Think list of ingredients but no steps or process for preparing a recipe.</image:title>
