To Sum it Up

"Success is in the details," at least that is the saying. Sometimes, for our younger learners, maybe even our older learners too, the details can be a lot to muddle through.

Students are not alone in their frustration.  Teachers can be daunted by the task of helping students to summarize-limit their responses and discussions about a text to the essentials.

A retelling involves sequence; it is shaped by details and particulars. A summary is something else. Students may be naturals at retelling, but summarizing is a skill that may exasperate them.

The 5Ws- Who, What, When, Where and Why are the guiding questions that lay the foundation for a thorough summary.

A simple way to quickly draft, a complete and succinct, summary is just what the teacher ordered!
